That UKBA place is a mystery. Firstly if you gonna take nearly 900 pounds from someone for an application at least have a system that will keep customers in the scheme of things. Like a tracking system to say you have received the application and also it is in front of a caseworker, then finally let them know if it has been approved. Just with a simple reference number that they could input in your website. Not just apply and wait with heart in mouth. Also dunno why it takes so long just to do some checks on a person.

Just my opinion. Some might disagree.

I just wanted to let you guys know how unpleasant the experience was. On 28/03/2014 I received a thick brown envelope returning my documents - approval! - I thought...Not this time... There was also a letter dated 24/02/2013 requesting evidence of my identity to be sent by 14/04/2014, otherwise my application could be refused!!! My National ID (evidence of my identity that was used for obtaining English qualification and Life in the UK) was the first document I put in the envelope when I submitted my application as I considered it the most valuable. I scanned all my documents before sealing the envelope. The documents were sent using special delivery.

Home Office claim they never received the ID. They received all other documents but no ID that was in the same envelope! yeah right. I sent them a letter explaining the situation on Monday 31st March 2014. This time I included my driving license as evidence of my identity and also included pre-paid special delivery envelope. Was really unhappy that I am having to use another document and that my National ID was misplaced/lost or stolen by them! Even worse I could not get through to them by phone. Nightmare!

Friday 11/04/2014 my pre-paid special delivery envelope arrived - this time successful approval, my driving license returned but still no National ID. they claim they never received it and that I should contact Royal Mail! They also say it is their policy to keep my certificate for the life in the UK test.

Unbelievable. With all that stolen identity stories I am now thinking about reporting it to the Police.

anyway...this is my story.

I do not wish anyone to go through anything like that!

It is for that same reason why I used the NCS service. I dont have to give them any original documents so that they can lose it. Sure its more money buy that money is well spent vs the troubles you will now have to endure with dealing with UKBA and reporting the id as lost etc.

I've been watching this thread for a few weeks now.

It's my husband's application. Here's the timeline:

Eligibility criteria: British Citizen Spouse 3 years
Method of application: NCS Hampshire
Date of Application: 5/3/14
Date of receipt by UKBA: 6/3/14
Date of debit of fees: 10/3/14
Date of receipt of acknowledgement: Around 17/3/14
Date of receipt of approval: 10/4/14
Date of Ceremony: 3/6/14

We're pleased at how quick the approval was (around 5 weeks) as we were expecting to be waiting a lot longer for that. However, we had though the ceremony would be sooner than 8 weeks after approval! It's a bit of a long wait but we are in no rush so won't pay for a private one. Still have the passport to do next before we can go on holiday anyway!

You also have to bring a proof of identity, such as passport or photo driving licence.
