Passport application from abroad

Hello all
I am having to travel immediately after my naturalisation ceremony leaving me no time to apply for my UK passport. Is is possible for me to apply for my first UK passport from abroad. I saw the page on FCO

but not sure if the 1st adult passport is possible from abroad. Does anyone have experience of doing this? how do they do the interview in that case. what about the referees? do they need to be from that country?

For how long do you intend to remain abroad? Days, weeks months?
Will you be "visiting" the country you are travelling to, or be a "resident / worker"?
If I may ask, which country will you be travelling to?

Don't have experience myself but surely there are enough Brits (by birth) living abroad who never been to the UK and they should be able to get a 1st adult passport.

Interviews are usually conducted for 1st passport but this is down to the consulate.

You might have difficulties with the countersignature as they would need to know you for 2 years and should be a professional who is British citizen, other British national or Commonwealth citizen (similar rules to when applying from the UK).

I will be away till June or July 2012 as a resident on employment visa. My employer has agreed to help me get new my resident permit and visa once my UK passport is ready, as I can't use my current passport once I have another nationality. I will be in China (shanghai) for that period.

Thank you Jumbo for your response. Is is possible to get the form countersigned by someone here in the UK before I leave? As I will be new in China, I don't know anyone there who know me for more than 2 years.

There is no requirement that the countersignature resides in the same country you apply in. The issue is that the countersignature officially needs to sign after you have filled in all the form including your address (do you know that already?) and a declaration that you are in the country when you sign and date the form. How strict they are on the dates? Don't know. Best to ask the consulate in China.

Please note that when applying for a passport aboard the form is different (form C1) and the application is handled by FCO and not IPS.

May be I am paranoid - but if one applies for the first passport after naturalization from a foreign country, can they question the discrepancy between what you said in the AN1 form and now about future intentions? Case worker guidance for AN1 shows that if some one is taking up an employment for more than 6 months abroad, then the application should be refused. I can understand that it might be difficult to revoke your citizenship now, but this is what I feel. May be the moderators have a different opinion.

As it states in the nationality team instructions, it is difficult to establish future intentions and hence your past behaviour is used to indicate your future plans.
We don't know the full story. This offer to work abroad might have been offered after the OP applied for naturalisation several months ago. Life brings unexpected opportunities.

thank you all for your valuable comments and links. with regards to Osteophytes comment and Jambo's response regarding future intentions. In my case, the job offer was certainly after my nationality application. I have lived in the UK for 13 years and this new job is a teaching assignment by a british university in their campus abroad. Moreover an offer which I can't refuse when many are loosing job due to recession and funding cuts in higher education.

Thank you Jambo for the bringing some clarify regarding the counter-signatory in the application form. I wil download the form and get it going as soon as I hit the ground. I may have to send it back to UK to get it signed I guess to avoid any problem?

I will update this message once I have further news. moving next to next week. a lot of things to sort out before that. thank you all once again.

Would you mind updating us on whether you were able to obtain your first british passport after naturalisation from overseas as you intended.

Why would this be an issue? Once you are British you can apply for a British passport whenever and wherever you wish.
