Referees: List of acceptable professional persons

Postby gidoc » Mon Feb 07, 2011 12:13 pm

Hi all,
Please does any one know if Consultants in NHS Hospitals are acceptable as referees.
This category is not in the list of referees updated 06/ 2010, however in the notes on UKBA website, 'Completing the application form' it does say-

'Your application must include details of two referees. The referees should have known you personally for at least three years. One referee should be a person of any nationality who is of professional standing such as a doctor, minister of religion, civil servant or a member of a professional association such as an accountant or a solicitor'

Hi Gidoc,

I've heard various reasons myself as to why doctors (including consultants) don't feature on the lis of accepted professions - the most plausible, to my mind, is that they were taken off in an attempt to reduce the number of people booking appointments with their doctors just to get their reference.

Another point that I've taken from other discussions is that the list of accepted professions isn't necessarily exhaustive so should be used as a guide more than a catalogue. Has anyone got different experiences/anecdotes to share about this?

Personally, I would be shocked if a consultant wasn't deemed appropriate given their status, qualifications and professional standing.
