Sick - Disability Benefits

Dear All,

I am currently on sick leave from my work but my company does not pay sick leave but SSP. I recently had a surgery and later developed some complications and currently i am not in a condition to work or wallk. it will be several months before i recover. SSP is not enough to pay my bills etc and i am just wondering if i can claim disability benefits or what kind of benefits i can claim / entitled to?

That sounds like you could try to claim ESA, You can read the requirements here

You will have to attend a medical to see if they agree with what you say and if you look on benefits forums on other sites, you will see that there appears to be a wait for these medicals. Because people haven't been owning up to when they are better as they are required to do, there are often lots of medical to attend if time goes on.

If you are are on a low income and need help with rent and council tax, you can contact your local council.

For all income based welfare claims, you partners income is used too, even if they can't have pubic funds.


For longterm ill health, there is PIP which also requires medicals. This has much stricter requirements than the DLA benefit it replaced.

You might want to look at taking out insurance in future for if you get sick, have an accident or lose your job. As so many now don't do this and rely on the welfare state instead, the welfare state has/is changing the rules under the Welfare Reform Act

Some of the changes are -
Contribution based ESA now has has a one year time limit unless the person is put in the Support Group after each medical.
Those in the Work related group of ESA, now often have to attend the job centre or regular work provider appointments to get them ready for work for when their ESA is stopped.
Income based ESA is going to be moved onto the new stricter one welfare payment, Universal Credit.
Housing Benefit is also being replaced by the stricter, Universal Credit.
From 2018, SMI will cease to be a benefit and will become a loan, with interest and fees. This is also for those already claiming SMI too. Payable when you return to work or when the property is sold.

Thank you so much for your advice and i did checked the sickness and unemployment insurance but unfortunately i do not qualify as i have a one month gap between job switching plus they do not cover any existing condition. But it will be worth it for the future.

Remember too that these only calculate on present welfare rules and not for any known reductions that are coming in. These known changes will be listed on those sites in a separate place, like these 2016 and 2017 changes.

Hopefully you will be back at work long before the 2018 changes come in, with insurance in place.
