Getting married in Las Vegas...

Hi All,

Question: My Fiancé is Brazilian (we have a Defacto visa expiring in April 2010).

We want to get married in UK or Abroad before Defacto expires. Most likely next year.

I understand that we will need to apply for a certificate of approval – if marrying in the UK, does anyone know if this is correct?

Also - As the BIG wedding will be in Brazil in 2010 we are considering getting married in Las Vegas (low key) before her current Defacto visa expires. From previous postings I understand that this would be valid in the UK? Can anyone confirm?

Yes a Las Vegas wedding is valid in the UK.

Just to make sure there are no doubts in UK make sure you get it Apostiled.

Go to Las Vegas City Hall and follow their instructions to obtain the Long Form copy of the certificate, get it signed and notarized by them, and further Apostiled by the office they will indicate, mentioning for Foreign use.

Mike_T: It can't hurt to get the long form and apostile, but you might find that you don't need it. My husband and I got married in New York City Hall and spent most of our wedding day in queues getting all the various marriage certificate forms and official copies... only to discover that no one questioned our normal, short form marriage certificate. We have never used the long form or apostile, but I'm still glad we had them just in case. It might depend on how 'official' yours looks and how much detail it contains. Apparently ours is OK.

I would recommend getting a few extra marriage certificate copies, though. If anything happens to your marriage certificate, you have back up - and you won't mind as much when some unthinking bureaucrat sends it back folded and creased in an envelope.
