Health insurance for family visitor from India to UK

Post by stitaprajna » Sun Mar 01, 2015 4:03 pm

My parents will be visiting me in UK from India for about 6 months on Family Visitor Visa.
I am planning to take health insurance for them. I can take health insurance from India or UK.
Insurance from India are cheaper compared to UK ones but I am not sure if it easier, convenient, reliable to take it from UK.
My parents are above 70s and there are chances that they may need some GP/hospital visits or treatments.

Please could anyone advise me.
Many Thanks,
Stit

If they will actually use the insurance by visiting a GP or a hospital, you would want to make sure that the insurance would actually be accepted in the UK. You may be better off taking the insurance out in the UK.

Make sure you read the fine print really well, such as what conditions are not covered, what medications need to be paid for, what the excess is and whether the insurance would cover the cost of repatriating your parents back o India if they need to go to a hospital there.

I think there are good cashless travel insurances from India. Google these.
Most importantly as your parents will be staying with you most of the time, find out the local private/nhs hospitals accept the cashless cover etc. The documentation from insurance companies will state the list.

One immediate reason for getting insurance form India. As parents are 70ish there will be GP's specialists treating them on regular basis and insurance companies will want declarations etc from them. IMHO that would be also a good option to sort from India end.

Whatever insurance you buy, please make sure you have read and understood their claims procedure and timelines. I wouldn't base buying decision based on prices alone but on how easy+fast is the claims process and what+how much cover available in local vicinity of your parents stay in the UK.
