Tax guidance for migrants

If you have moved to the UK from abroad, you can make use of free online information to help with your UK tax affairs. This is provided by the Low Incomes Tax Reform Group (LITRG) for anyone coming to live, work or study in the UK. LITRG is an independent charity.

The LITRG website is designed to provide migrants with information on how to deal with the most common tax issues faced by those coming to and leaving the UK. Their information also covers tax credits and Child Benefit. You can find it at http://www.litrg.org.uk. It includes a basic information guide about the UK tax and benefits system together with a series of useful fact sheets.

If you have come to live or work in the UK and you have a low income, less than £15,000 per year, you can also make use of a free telephone helpline. This helpline provides free basic guidance on tax, national insurance, self-employment, tax credits and child benefit to low income migrants across the UK. The helpline is run by staff from Migrants Resource Centre supported by LITRG. The telephone number is 033 33355 333. The helpline is open on Tuesday 10-12.30pm, Thursday 2-4.30pm and Friday 10-12.30pm.

These are pilot projects running until 21 July 2014.
