Do You Need Maintenance Funds for ILR Child Dependants

Hi Guys,
I have always appreciated the quality / sound advise received on this site.
I am in the process of applying for my son (currently outside the UK) to join me. I recently received my ILR after 2 years as HSMP and then 3 yrs T1 Gen.
I have been advised to apply for him using Form VAF4A and VAF4A(2) Fin Req form.
But yesterday, a friend told me I need to have maintenance funds for any dependents (even if my dependent is just applying to get inside from abroad).
I need your valuable advise pls.
