Spouse/fiancee - support requirement

Post by Naiad » Thu Jan 26, 2006 10:43 am

The time is fast approaching when we will put in our fiancee visa application. We think we have everything well in order but are wondering how important savings are? My fiance has a mortgage and for this reason doesn't have much savings (if he did, he'd use them to pay more off the mortgage).

He has a good job as a professional and owns his own home but do they require a certain amount of savings too?

Forgot to add;

I have a lot of savings of my own but does this count for anything or are they only interested in the UK citizen's savings.

Do his assets or equity in his house count for anything?

Naiad, as regards the financial test, it merely needs to be proved that you will not need to claim certain Public Funds. So all factors can be taken into account, including your savings.

Your fiancé's lack of savings should not be a worry if he has surplus income each month after paying off all recurring expenditure. It might be an idea if the evidence folder includes a simple statement showing the net amount of income per month, and then expenditure details .... mortgage interest, council tax, gas, electricity, etc etc .... leaving a net amount for food and leisure etc.. That will give the ECO considering your visa application a good idea whether the financial test is passed. But also your savings will be helpful.

Thanks John. We did plan to put in a financial summary as you suggested but it's reassuring to know it all helps.
