Calculating absences for short visits

Hello,
If I have made short visits outside UK for business purpose, then do I need to get a letter from my ex-employers (like 4 yrs ago employed with them)?
Also suppose I leave UK today morning and return back tomorrow before midnight, will that be counted as 1 day of absence?
Please guide me on this.
