Adequate maintenance:- benefits rates from April 2012

Post by Greenie » Fri May 25, 2012 4:58 pm

Please note that there are new benefits rates effective from April 2012 which will need to be used in order to calculate adequate maintenance levels. To work out how much income/savings are required, applicants need to calculate how much they have left from their income/savings after rent, council tax and credit / loan payments have been deducted, and they need to be at the rates shown below or above (depending on the size of the family)

Key rates are as follows

Income support rate for a:
couple £111.45 per week/£482.95 per calendar month
single person over 25: £71 per week/£307.67 per calendar month
each dependent child: £64.99 per week/£281.62 per month
income support family premium: £17.40 per week

Using these calculations a couple with two children would need to show per week, after rent/council tax are deducted
£111.45 for couple
£17.40 family premium
£64.99 x 2 per child
(note: muliply by 52 and divide by 12 for monthly rate)

A couple with no children would need to show £111.45 per week remaining after rent/council tax is deducted.

Note there is an alternative way to calculate the additional amounts needed for children. The above rates relate to the income support premiums where an income support claim was made prior to sep 2005. The UKBA in their family consultation refer to the tax credit rates which are applicable to most people, and are lower. namely

£545 per year (family element)
£2,690 per year per child (child element)

per month:
£45.42 per month (family element - just one for each family)
£224.17 per month per child

So a family with two children using this calculation would need

£482.95 per calendar month (income support rate for a couple)
+ £45.42 per month for the family
+ £224.17 per month per child
