I also have the same doubt. I have received my British Passport and would like to apply for OCI. But I haven't got my birth certificate. Would that be a problem.

I've also got a (rather silly) question - what is a school leaving certificate? If I haven't got one, would the marksheet from secondary or high school do?

Thanks
Paul

That is my doubt as well. I have an indian passport that I will be surrendering soon. That will give me the surrender certificate and cancelled passport I presume. So aren't these enough?

I can't find anything on HCI website that states that birth certificate and school leaving certificate are not needed if you have an Indian passport and surrender certificate.

you only need surrender certificate to prove your indian origin. no other documents required.

if an applicant is unable to provide a passport or surrender certificate, then other supporting documents (e.g. brith certificate, school leaving cert ) are necessary.

ah, i just viewed the HCI website, OCI section and understand your confusion. Surrender certificate was listed as item no (iii) in the Documents Required section. Seems someone edited the website and removed the key piece of info.

Take a look at CGI B'ham site - it'll help clarify.

Yes this makes sense. Thanks for sharing the link.

Makes me wonder should I apply in CGI Birmingham instead of HCI London. Just from their website they look a lot more organised and clear.

Do we know if getting OCI done at Bham is less painful than in London?

Normally the processing time is quicker if applied in London. Carry all the documents listed in CGI website but it's unlikely you'll need anything but surrender certificate to prove indian origin.
