Post by east579new » Wed Jul 23, 2014 7:26 am

If you have leave to remain (18 months) are you able to vote in local council elections and general elections?

What about if you are a commonwealth citizen with limited leave to remain? can you vote? my friend has a partner who has just recived leave to remain 2 1/2 years and is from a commonwealth country can he vote?

As a Commonwealth citizen, yes.

My friend was told today when he contacted the electoral services in his area that his partner was NOT eligible to vote in either local or general elections, yet she is a commonwealth citizen and has leave to remain in the uk are they trying it on should he make a complaint?

They are incorrect. I suggest your friend prints the information from this link or emails the link to them.

If they still refuse, he should contact his MP...especially if he's going to vote for them

I'm assuming he's over 18.
