Hi guys, I need some advice. I am due to travel to Spain a week (12-20 July) after the 4 July ceremony, meaning I will not be in possession of an Irish passport by then. By virtue of my wife being Spanish and having exercised her EU Treaty Rights in Ireland, I have not applied for a visa to Spain in the last five years (or so) when we travel together.

We will be travelling together as usual and I am of the opinion that I have to apply for a Schengen visa from the Spanish Embassy because I have had to return my Stamp 4 EU Fam. Does anyone think that I should also apply for a re-entry visa from the GNIB? I will not (exactly) be an alien after getting the Certificate of Naturalisation.

Of course, by the time I am due to travel, I would have submitted the Certificate of Naturalisation together with the other documents and photos required to apply for the Irish passport. According to the passport issuance website, a new passport takes, on average, 15 working days so the earliest I expect to have it is around 25 July. It is possible but expensive to postpone the trip as flights and accommodation have been booked and my wife can only take her holidays during that period.

Any suggestions are welcome.

I think you will also need to send your present travel document(passport) together with the irish passport application.

You need to send your current passport in order for the Irish Passport to be issued.

Thanks for that. I will submit the application in person at the Dublin office right after the ceremony to discuss this issue. It is possible that they could take a certified copy together with another form of photo ID.

It will be impossible to submit in person if this is your first Irish passport application. Only passport express is allow for the new applicant and if you dont send all document they will return everything back to you.

Thanks guys, I have taken the alternative of not going to Spain in July and count my loss. Might go for a long weekend in August. I also need to be in Greece during the last week of July so I will go ahead and apply for the passport immediately after the ceremony and allow for a three-week window. I travel a lot to mainland Europe for work and leisure so getting an Irish passport is the best thing to happen to me as it eases travel a lot.

I received my Irish passport today via Passport Express. Good luck to all those who have applied or are intending to apply for citizenship.

I posted all the details on the 14th of July 2014. I am still waiting for mine. On their website it says it will be printed on the 28th of July 2014.

Do you mind me asking how long it took for you to receive it from the time you posted all your documents?

4th July to 24th July. At the moment, it takes a minimum of 15 working days to process first-time applicants.
