How do I get a Bulgarian work permit

Post by Mensur » Sun Jul 27, 2014 8:47 pm

What are the requirements in order to obtain a Bulgarian work permit. I was thinking of buying a small business in Bulgaria for 20,000 Euros and then work in it. How easy will this be to do? Any details on the process I'd have to go through in order to do this?

Non-EU/EEA or Swiss citizens
Non-EU/EEA or Swiss citizens have the right to work in Bulgaria only after a National Employment Agency work permit is issued. The permit must be requested by the employer. Applications are submitted to the local branch of the Employment Agency of the foreigner's work place.

Work permits are issued to foreigner's who possess specific skills or specialised knowledge that can not be found on the national labour market, to those wishing to be self-employed or if they have been commissioned by a foreign employer to provide services in Bulgaria.

The work permit is issued for a fixed period of time, usually one year, for a specific job and employer. The permit may be renewed for a further three years for executive personnel and managerial positions. Once the work permit is issued this provides a basis for the Bulgarian Consular representations abroad to issue a visa, valid for the same length of time.

A residence permit must be applied for within 90 days of arrival in Bulgaria.

Work permits are not required for foreigners with permanent residence status in Bulgaria or those who have been granted asylum or other humanitarian status.

Thanks for the information Amber, but if I were to buy a shop in Bulgaria for 20,000 to 30,000 Euros and then intend to work in it, would I be granted a work permit? It says in the article you've posted that work permits are granted to foreigners who wish to be self employed, I just want to confirm whether I fit the criteria or not with the shop I want to buy and run. Am I likely to be granted a work permit for such a business venture?

Please any answers to my question will be greatly appreciated. Is my idea sufficient to get a Bulgarian Work Permit or do I have to invest more money in my business. If so how much money is required?

Better if you contact the nearest local Bulgarian embassy and inquire all this information. Usually for doing business the business/investor/entrepreneur visa need. Best to contact the local embassy who will tell you that what type of visa you should apply.
