has been granted a visa to travel to the Republic of Ireland by the Republic of
Ireland authorities for the purpose of a stay of a period of 90 days or fewer,
Only for Class-C short stay visit visas
seems to not include Class-D long stay visas and Irish re-entry visas.

UK don't accept Irish visa till after 12th October 2014.
currently its seems the Irish already accept UK visa, but UK don't accept Irish visa

quote
- Holders of a visa issued by the United Kingdom must have
entered and been granted a stay in the United Kingdom for up
to 180 days. Travel to a third country, before traveling to
Ireland (Rep. of), is permitted if the UK visa is still
valid. Furthermore, re-entry into Ireland (Rep. of) from a
third country is permitted if the UK visa and period of the
stay granted in the United Kingdom are still valid. Holders
of long term visas must visit Ireland (Rep. of) within a
current period of stay granted in the United Kingdom.

For those arriving in Northern Ireland and traveling to
Ireland (Rep. of), the visa waiver programme will apply and
only a UK visa will be required.

For those arriving first in Ireland (Rep. of) and traveling to
Northern Ireland and returning to Ireland (Rep. of), they will require an Irish
and UK visa
.

For those arriving in Northern Ireland,
traveling to Ireland (Rep. of) and then returning to
Northern Ireland, the visa waiver programme will apply but
the appropriate UK visa will be required to allow a second
entry into Northern Ireland.
On the visa, the "Type of Visa" should be "C" with under the
remarks "C-visit", "C-visit-general", "C-visit-business",
"C-visit-academic" or "C-visit-sport"

finally implemented
requires visa with endorsement "BIVS" meaning British Irish Visa Scheme
If issued by UK, must enter UK first

Notes:
- For those arriving in the United Kingdom (UK), including
Northern Ireland, and subsequently traveling to Ireland
(Rep.), a UK visa, with the endorsement 'BIVS' will be
required. For those arriving first in Ireland (Rep.) and
traveling to the UK, including Northern Ireland, and
returning to Ireland (Rep.), an Irish visa, with the
endorsement 'BIVS' and current permission to remain in
Ireland as shown by the relevant stamp in their passport,
will be required. For those arriving in the UK, including
Northern Ireland, traveling to Ireland (Rep.) and then
returning to the UK, including Northern Ireland, the
appropriate UK visa will be required to allow a second entry
into the UK, including Northern Ireland.
Holders of a visa issued by the UK, with the endorsement
'BIVS', must have entered and been granted a stay in the UK
for up to 180 days. Travel to a third country, before
traveling to Ireland (Rep.), is permitted if the UK visa,
with the endorsement 'BIVS', is still valid. Furthermore,
re-entry into Ireland (Rep.) from a third country is
permitted if the UK visa, with the endorsement 'BIVS', and
period of the stay granted in the UK are still valid.
Holders of long term visas, with the endorsement 'BIVS',
must visit Ireland (Rep.) within a current period of stay
granted in the UK.

It would make sense as anyway with the common travel area there is not border control between the 2 countries.
But I wouldn't be holding my breath ...
