How soon to register for the GNIB card?

Post by neuron » Tue Oct 28, 2014 8:42 am

I was planning to go to the Garda to register for the GNIB card the day after I land in Cork, as I need it to open a bank account, register for a PPS number, etc.

But, I was told by a person in the Irish embassy that I should wait a week or so, because if I go immediately after coming to Ireland, my entry into the State won't be in the system yet! Does that make sense?

It doesn't make any sense, you can go to your local Garda station for registration, and might be they would be looking for a proof of address, i.e. a land lord letter etc

P.S: What visa you currently hold i.e. study / work ?
