Claiming ctc with no resource to public fund

hi, my friend is in very bad situation that he is student he claimed ctc since his son born in uk ,now hmrc wrote to him and asked him that provide proof that you have right to claim ctc. He knows now he can not apply any benefit and he is willing to pay back the money which he received last one year. My question is will he has any problem from home office or hmrc? Please advise asap

What is the status of his partner? Was it a single or joint claim?

Tier 4 dependant claim was joint name.
