On what basis are you making the application. 3 year of marriage to Irish Citizen or 5 years residence. No break in your 5 years residence?

Hi Obie,

Thank you very much for your response!

I'm not the one applying, my partner (Spanish national) will apply for the Irish one, he's been here for more than 4 years. He got here in 2011. However, the question is:

He came here as a student in 2011, to study in Trinity. He opened his bank account in 2011 (I think it was around Sep), also he shared an apartment but they didn't allow him to put his name in any bills or anything related. So he doesn't have much to prove from 2011.

I was thinking that he could try to ask for a school letter saying that he'd studied there and a few bank statements from that time (If the bank is able to provide him with it).

Otherwise I have no idea what he can use to prove that he was here from 2011.

We've been in a civil partnership since 2014, so once he gets his Irish passport I will be able to apply for my naturalisation within 3 years. Is this correct?

If your issues are related to only those mentioned above. Go and meet the agency in the link: http://www.newcommunities.ie/

They will help you out. It is for free. They work in association with Dept. of Justice.

Thank you for that! Much appreciated.

If he applies for the naturalisation and gets it, can I apply for mine as being in a civil partnership to an Irish national, instead of an EU?

Or they won't allow it, since they can allow that he just become Irish citizen?

Does it make any difference being born in Ireland and getting the naturalisation?

The answer is yes. The problem is that he has not lived in Ireland for 5 years and therefore citizenship may not be possible.

Hi Obie,

Yeah I know that, he's only applying in Sept next year, though. :)

Well that should be fine, provided there has been no changes to the law by then.

Hi Obie,

That's correct.

I was just reading the citizenship form and it says: 'Please submit three different proofs of residence for each year showing name and address for this period'. Does it mean that if if has lived in 2 different addresses in one year he will need to send 6 proof of addresses (3x2 in a year) instead of only 3 for the same year?

I hope it makes sense. Also, promise this is the last question! :P

Thank you very much for the help so far.

The form ask you to provide 3 proofs for each year, not for each addresses you lived in a year.

You can provide 3 proof from 3 different address you resided in that year.
