I received my ILR BRP Card Today and it has expiry of 31/12/2024. All ILR Cards will have the expiry date of 31/12/2024. As someone else told on this board ILR card will not expire and we might have to renew or some other type of new card will be introduced after 31/12/2024. Most/All of us will be having British passport.

You don't have to renew a UK passport if you stay in the UK. You do have to renew a BRP when it expires. And note that some BRP holders are not qualified to naturalise, and yet others don't want to give up their original nationality to become British.
Anyone knows for what reasons some ILR holders might not qualify for naturalisation?

It seems that all BRPs with No Time Limit expire sometime in 2024. Those granted recently have only 7 years to run. There is some uncorroborated talk of a review in 2024

It is an EU instruction that all biometric documents need to be updated with more enhanced security features. UK passports general change in design and security features every 10 years.

Hi All,

I've received a response on this from HomeOffice explaining the reason for expiry date 30-Dec-2024
Thank you for your email regarding a possible error with the expiry date on your Biometric Residence Permit (BRP).

The issue has now been investigated and the 31 December 2024 validity date is due to a requirement by the EU to restrict BRPs which do not incorporate the next generation of encryption technology.

As the UK intends to introduce the new technology during 2016 the date restriction affects only BRPs issued to adults with settled status (ILR/NTL).

Any BRP rightfully held on 01 July 2024 that is restricted will be replaced free of charge, with the balance of the 10 year period initially expected being issued on a new BRP.

This means that anyone who has paid a fee in expectation of receiving ten year evidence of settled status will still do so, but it will be spread over two BRPs.

The date restriction does not change the entitlements of the rightful holder to work, access services/benefits or travel. The rightful holder still has settled status.

I hope this information answers your queries.

Regards
BRP Error Team

I have collected mine today and it also says it's valid until 31-12-2024.
If the above explanation is true, how would they notify us by 2024?
I would've probably moved address about 50 times by then.

What happens if somebody gets their ILR in Jan 2024? Does it mean it expires in Dec 2024?

As it is coming to 2019 does anybody know the latest with this "new technology" ?

Common sense needs to prevail by applicants. Your CARD expires, so you apply for a NEW card in time. HO won't 'notify' you!! If someone gets ILR in January 2024, they will likely get one of the NEW cards!!!

No one on an internet forum will know what 'new technology' will be as we don't have knowledge of the inner workings and processes of HO.
