HSMP IT Salaries

Post by jokernumber01 » Thu Feb 12, 2009 7:15 pm

I just came in to the UK and have close to 4.9 years of experience on Java/J2EE. My educational background is Bachelor's in Computer Science and I also hold additional certifications in the techologies that i work and have experience on. If it holds some value, I worked for a big software product company (known worldwide) in India prior to this.

I have a very simple question - which I am very unsure of. I need people who are experienced in job search in the UK to answer this and help me out.

1. If I am looking at a permanent job in London, do you think it is fair to ask for £45K start (or less or more)?
2. If I am looking at a contract job in London, do you think it will be fair to look at £300 per day as starting (or less or more)?
3. Any other location outside London, what would be the right salary figure for both contract & permanent?
4. What are the best ways to search for a job in London (and UK in general) - other than job boards?
5. My priority is somehow to get to a decent J2EE position - By lowering my salary will it be possible to get to the jobs faster?

One Liner of Profile: J2EE - 4.9 Years - India - HSMP - Bachelor's[CS] - SCJP, SCBCD (Related Certifications)

No. You won't get anywhere, don't bother.

I'd say with only 5yrs experience that 45k is HIGHLY optimistic. If you were looking at 25-30k max maybe you'd get a job at the moment. I doubt it though. Contract wise if you are looking at 200/day then you might be considered for some roles. But the reality of it is is that London is mostly finance. So unless you hold specialised finance skills they require, then you won't get anywhere. Look at the job boards, while it doesn't LOOK back, it's very very bad. From april last year to now, the number of jobs posted is less than half in my field. However, 9/10 of every job is a 'fake' usually. Not always, but don't believe the job boards, that's all I can say. The market wages have dropped quite a lot too.

im willing to work for £20k per annum... does that mean i will get a job ?

6 months on, still sitting jobless.

with 6+ years IT industry experience - am a fool !

salary is no constraint - yes it is not - we can even give £100k for this job - but then , we wont give you the job anyway. so why not advertise 50k or even 100k. crap !

Woops!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

20K for an HSMP, it is too low I think. I do not know man, but I think that after taxes , you will have only to pay the rent and your annual expenses.

Experts, please suggestions..................................

I am no expert but my two pence..

20,000 pounds is indeed unthinkable & unacceptable. I can get that much if I continue to stay in India for 2 years (albeit with two job changes). The annual hike is anyways much better here compared to UK.

The point I am making is that one doesn't want to cast himself in a particular salary bracket whilst in UK. And if one thinks 'I will accept any offer that comes along at this time and ask for 40,000 pounds when the market recovers' would just be the individuals whim (Unless one is 'really' satisfied with whatever s/he gets!). Better start with a decent amount so that you can ask for a reasonable increase during the hike or applying for further job.

Next time I reach UK, I do not plan to take 'pictures' like tourists. I mean 'business' :!: I do not mind if the market takes pretty long to recover. I am sharpening my skills while I am still here !!

Yes, I agree , 20k is too low.
But Guys how much an HSMP (newcomers in UK) have to say in an interview when one is questioned about salary expectation.
lets say 6 years of experience. and a master in engineering.

I would appreciate your comments

with 20 K you will get 1400 GBP in hand ..expense would be 1000 GBP(if you dont go out ,stay miserly)...So you will save 400 per month..not worth the pain..You can sustain for short time..But imagine your life where you cannot eat out/go for movies/cannot travel by train /dont buy new clothes...
IF u r from India, you can save more then 400 GBP(28000 INR) and live like a king ..

Dont waste your life in 20K ,if u r in IT
