spouse to a masters student

Post by siebel » Tue Jun 01, 2004 5:39 pm

Hi
Could some one please help me here
Is a spouse of a masters student allowed to work?
Is there a limit on the kind of work and hours of work.
What kind of visa does she apply for?

You are allowed to take any type of employment as long your passport stamp (or residence permit) does not restrict employment.

Usually spouses of students who take courses longer than one year are given the above stamp. The only restrictions they get are:

1. Time limit on stay.
2. No recourse to Public Funds.

hi tnavon

thanks for your response.
But I need to ask another question.
The scenario is that I am going for a 1year masters programme and my spouse already has a visit visa which will not expire until after a year.
Does she need to apply for another type of visa to be able to work.

Waiting for your answers.

She should apply for a different visa. as entering the UK on a visitor's visa will both restrict her rights and impose a shorter limit of continuous stay.

Siebel,

Best way is to include her as a dependent in your student visa application - she will get a 'student dependent' visa of the same validity as your student visa but endorsed with conditons as described by tnavon. Note that such empoyment approval which is open i.e full time and any occupation is subject to the student visa being of 12 months or longer duration.
