Austrian Visa Austrian Entry?

Austrian Visa Austrian Entry?

I am a British national. My wife is a chinese national.We want to travel to Italy for 19th May. Italian embassy has no appointments but Austrian embassy may.

Assuming we get a multi-entry visa -

Does my wife have to go to Austrian before travelling to Italy with me?

If my wife has to enter Schengenland via Austria, can she come back and then re-enter into Italy?
