@andromeda hope you've got a result. I had a similar experience. It took 2.5 months to get my passport returned. The only way is to keep calling them. Eventually a proactive officer in the Sheffield office was on my case and actually called me back three times! To highlight how amazing the callback ...

Don't count on it. My experience: Sent 1st return of Document request for my passport February 20. At end of process it says wait 10 working days. Didn't receive it so used the follow up form on March 5. 2 weeks passed. Called UKVI. The guy I spoke to said he'd email the team and I should receive it ...

The NCS isn't available for all applications such as a UKM application (as far as I can tell) and also one has to dig for the information, it certainly isn't given as a possibility on the UKM form or guide. I know this post is a little old. But the previous post begs the question - why don't they copy documents (especially passports) and send them back automatically? It would save time with people calling and emailing, chasing up their application and whether their documents have been returned. And ...
