No problems entering or leaving on his British passport. They just stamped his passport with a temporary resident visa and wished him a good holiday.

No he does not have to attend with you. make sure you have his passport and your marriage certificate at hand. they will make copies of everything.

It does not matter about your passport expiring - effectively once you apply for naturalisation and become british, you will apply for a new passport. My best bet would be Leeds Bradford airport, the majority of passengers are Brits arrriving or leaving. I have just come back from a holiday in Cape Town. We got diverted to Manchester and I was questioned extensively by the IO even though I have been here for three years.

Check the expiry date on your wife's passport, the ILE is most probably dated till the end of the current passport life. As far as I know, ILE has no limits on it.
