Vinny thanks for responding. In the refusal letter they have written 'we suggest you make a new application in 2018 when your 5 years residence requirement has been met' (along these lines,not exact wording) Why would they write that rather than mentioning a 10 year ban? any ideas? If anyone else ...

Do you know if he can switch to student visa while staying in uk? I looked on ukba website but it seems that one has to leave the country to make the studen visa application.

He has no children from the marriage. He was a student for 3 years, then 2 years post study work visa, then 2 years spouse visa.

My friend came to uk as student, then got married and changed to spouse visa - the marriage has broken down and he is now nearing end of spouse 2 year visa. What category can he switch to without having to leave the UK? can her apply as student again?
