switching from director of company to self employed

Dear all, I wonder if its is doable to switch from being company's director to self employed afetr one year of ur visa. Do you need to inform boarder agency about swictching ur status. Can anyone please tell me which one is easier to maintain status for extension later on. Which status is good for annual tax returns?
