How to complete 10 years legal stay

Hi. One of my friend is in UK on tier 4 doing Phd which will finish in September 2017. His visa is till Jan 2018.
He came here in September 2008. When his vise will finish in Jan 2018, he will short of nine months to complete his 10 year legal stay.
Can anyone pls guide that what options he have to complete his 10 years.

Get another visa. Tier 2? Family route (fiancee/spouse)?

I believe that psw has finished for PhD students as well, will the Tier 2 visa will be through an employer only Or can he go on entrepreneur route if not the family route.

Tier 2 has to be through one of the approved sponsor.

Tier 1 ENT you need the funds for investing and pass the genuine entrepreneur test.

I think your friend should be able to apply for the one year Doctorate Extension Scheme. See the link below
