Regarding ILR

Hi,
I have a quick question, I am a doctor working in NHS. My 5 years tier 2 will be completed on 26 Sep 2016. My current visa is til 16 August 2016.
My question is do I have to get an extension for my tier 2 visa and then after 40 days when 26 Sep 2016 comes I can apply for ILR or is there a way of by passing it?.
I don't want to spend money for getting an extension and then spending more to get an ILR after a month.

Visa start date is 7 Sep 2011
I arrived on 26 Sep 2011

and my contract is ongoing and is uptil Feb 2020.

You are eligible to apply for ilr 28 days before 7 Sept, that is anytime from 10 Aug onwards.
You will however need supporting documents from employer like letter stating ongoing requirement of u, salary at appropriate scale etc,(which all should not be a problem for u).
