US/UK dual citizenship

Post by Emma84 » Sun Sep 30, 2007 9:21 am

I had a conversation with my mother last night during which she told me she didn't think US law allowed dual citizenship (She does not want me to revoke my American citizenship). Is that true?

I need to know as one of my long term aims is to apply for British citizenship and I know that Britain recognises dual citizenship.

Thanks for the links vinny.

So as far as I can understand it, the US has the right to force you to revoke your US citizenship if you voluntarily and with the intention of giving up US citizenship, apply for naturalisation in another country.

The thing that has me confused is that I have absolutely no intention of giving up my US citizenship but I do want to apply for naturalisation as a British citizen. Does that mean that the US has no right to force me to revoke my US citizenship?

Emma, there are quite a number of members of this Board who hold both US and British Citizenship. Based upon past postings on this subject, the only specific requirement of the US is that the US passport is used to enter and to leave the US. And whilst not a specific requirement as such, no doubt the British passport would be used to enter and leave the UK.

Other specific U.S. requirements exist, notably:

1. Continue filing for U.S. federal taxes when overseas, even if you don't have to pay anything; (foreign income exclusions, foreign tax credits etc) and

2. Register for Selective Service if/when liable to do so.
