In most of the cases the letter is not mandatory, but it is good to have.
It is mandatory if you have travelled overseas on work related and stayed for longer period. If your total number of days outside UK is within the permitted days, then it shouldn't me a much worry.
I suggest you also keep your payslips during your absence and can show them in case if they ask you.
At the end it depends on the case worker.
