Work Permit or HSMP for Russian

Post by tommyben » Tue Feb 12, 2008 2:17 pm

Hi,

I'm posting this for a Russian friend of mine who is 25 years old and resides in Russia (single). My friend holds two diplomas one in French and one in English (from a university in Dublin, Ireland) and has previously been to the UK on two visitor visas and has returned to Russia each time. My question is what do you think would be the best avenue for my friend to be able to work within the UK? I would have thought either work permit or HSMP. The advantage of HSMP is that it is not dependent on employer job. My doubts would arise regarding the diploma whether or not the french one gained in Russia would be considered bachelor equivalent. My friend is very fluent in about 8 languages including English. any thoughts on how difficult the process would be or if there any success stories for Russians gaining work permits or HSMP ?? if the HSMP is not an option then what would be the job prospects of person getting sponsored within the airline industry or translation jobs? Many Thanks

Not easy Mate, trust me. Is this person ur parnter?

Russian diplomas are worth nowt, my gf's bro bought his, and practically everyone I know in Russia either paid for results or paid for special tuition, coincidentally from the tutor and coincidentally the test questions where on the exams later....

WRT to WP/HSMP no doubt FSU folks have done it but we don't know any. There's not a great demand for Russian in the UK, and translators/interpreters really should be doing that from and to their native language, not a third one.

Careful with the word 'fluent' my gf is native in Russian, fluent in English and ok in German. To me her German sounds perfect, she lived there for 12 months, she converses without pauses, watches German telly without major issue but she's not fluent. Over used word that.

She should try Germany, Russian's abound there but mind u - they are the lowest of the low there socially.

While I remember HSMP is unlikely too unless she has supremely high earnings in Russia....., HSMP is points based

Hi

Thanks for the post. Friend of mine is not my partner nor gf. Diplomas were legitimately obtained, especially the English diploma from Ireland. Perhaps I should have rephrased to proficient in English and other languages. I've heard of the Naric website which can compare international qualifications to UK that might be a starting point but I'm not hopeful at the moment. So there is not alot demand for translators?? Russian teachers? Friend is currently in the aviation industrtry for well known German airline. Would a student visa be an easier path? HSMP would be ideal but again worried about the degree side of things. Please post any success stories!
