economic activity and ILR

Post by PaulM » Sun Apr 05, 2009 4:37 pm

I am curious about something regarding ILR and the definition of 'economic activity'. Does this purely refer to one's earnings in a working capacity or does this also include a wider structure of one's income whether it be in a passive (ie interest on money, shares, rentals) or purely active (earnings through wages)?

Much appreciate your input.

Paul

Hi PaulM, I think economic activity means a person has enough money to pay for his expenses without using any public funds. For people on hsmp applying for ILR the above could be true, but for someone on work permit I assume they should be employed at the time of ILR.

Hi Paul, we applied in person at Croyden last year and were surprised that showing economic activity meant matching up bank records with reported income. We had to race back home and submit all invoices for the last year along with all bank records. Not sure why they needed this as we were clearly making money ligitimately operating self employed company. It appeared to me that they were looking for discrepancies in bank statements and reported income.

My advice is to bring too much in the way of records, so you are not denied to to lack of information as we almost were.

Hi Londonblonde, I have read a few forum topics where people have not been cross checked bank statements and their pay slips, may be because they were employed not self employed and had their P60. Could it be those who are self employed they could be checked more, just a thought.

Yes, maybe. Surprising though as we have always been on the level. Taxes completed on time, etc. Perhaps if you are an employee this would not happen? Still, to be safe, I would bring in records showing a year economic activity as it is up to them if you have supplied enough information.
