Due to the shortfall in my spouse's income I have to demonstrate that I have 50,000 Pounds of savings. Can this money be under someone else's account if they can testify that they will make the funds available to me?

Nope!

You need to have the funds available in your account for a continuous 6 months to show as your savings.

What if I have the necessary amount deposited to my account for 6 months from some source , Say a friend or a family member? Will that be accepted or do I need to show a steady income adding up to the necessary funds?

A gift of cash savings would need to be declared in the application. The funds must be held in your account for at least 6 months and be under your control. They cannot be merely a loan.
