Citizenship for my son

I have been living and working in the UK for 7 years. My wife has been living and working in the UK for 4 years.
Both of us are Italian citizens and we don't hold a British citizenship.
Our son is 2 years old and he was born in Italy.
We would like our son to become a British citizen. Does anyone know the requirements for this to happen? Do we need to become British citizens before we can apply for our son's citizenship?
