Question regarding Employer reference

The HSMP form asks for contact details for each employer including a named contact to confirm the information.

What exactly to they need to confirm? Is it salary details? Only HR has these details and these are normally confidential.

Also has anyone who has applied previously had a confirmation call to the named contact?

Any help will be appreciated.
