A letter from a previous employer isn't required. Please see below.
SW 24.2. The sponsor must confirm that they still require the applicant to work for them for the foreseeable future, and that the applicant is paid, and will be paid for the foreseeable future, at least the salary in SW 24.3.

As you will note from XX’s schedule of absences from the UK, XX is frequently required to travel outside the UK as part of the duties of his/her employment.
I asked my previous employer for the absence letter since I was out of the country for 2 months+ last year. Hope this helps.
