Hello,
My partner and I are hoping to marry in the next 6 months to year however he is a Colombian national and has been in the UK for 12 years but he (rather stupidly) did not re-new his Visa as he was planning on returning home but his circumstances changed and he ended up staying in the UK.
Anyway my question is, with regards to 'giving notice to marry' we've done some reading about what documents to produce at the appointment with the registrar; it appears (on the surface at least) that all he'll need to bring is proof of his nationality, name, age and address. But are there any background checks carried out or additional documentation required which will prevent us from getting clearance to marry?
Thank you.....
Here's hoping..... |

Could happen to anyone!
This is not an immigration issue (anymore, since the ending of the COA). Getting married will not mean he can simply remain in the UK and it's no longer possible to expect a DL application from inside the UK to be considered. |

Thanks |

Ah I see. That's good to know - so bringing those few documents is enough for the appointment and they won't question visa status?
We're not marrying for him to stay here however - he was planning on waiting the extra 2 years to be eligible for the 14 year rule, but now that's changed to 20 we're distraught and are not sure what to do. We may just both leave the UK altogether in a few years but want to be married first. |
