Spouse British passport valid at application but expired after

Post by Lawgic » Tue Apr 14, 2026 7:52 pm

Hi all

Applicant due to apply for naturalisation in around June and will submit husband's British passport which is valid till August 2026.

Any idea how this works? If the application is decided around October (by which time husband's passport will have expired) what happens next?

1) husband needs to get new passport and wife needs to update UKBA?
2) nothing needs doing, an expired passport is still proof of British citizenship and was valid at time of application?

Could you provide links to any answer, please. Thank you!

No & No - note "UKBA" is now UKVI.

Correct.

No links to hand, but you could even apply with an expired passport.

Thank you

Any examples of people applying with expired passports? :) I believe UKVI requests "current" document from British spouse

The passport will not be expired when the application is submitted in June - provided the husband's passport expires in August!

The British husband is not the applicant, whatever happens with his passport once the spouse's application is submitted is irrelevant.

Biometric appointment availability

Post by Lawgic » Fri May 22, 2026 10:23 pm

Hi all,

Trying to figure out the sequence and to cut the extra time down. After the submission of naturalisation application and payment, will there be a separate window asking to arrange a biometric appointment? How is the availability in Liverpool (or nearby cities)? Can I check the availability now cause need to book train tickets in advance and plan the journey in advance.

Thank you

Yes you will need to register for TLS but you can only do that after you submit and pay for your appli. Nobody can check availability in advance. You have 45 days to attend the appointment so you should be able to find a slot that suits you if you can travel. There are free and paid appointments available.
All advice comes from personal research and experience and should not be regarded as professional opinion.

Can't tell you about Liverpool, but in Glasgow there were plenty of free appointments, we could book one even for the next day after submission. If there are not enough slots in Liverpool, search for other nearby cities

How many documents to prove residence?

Post by Lawgic » Thu May 28, 2026 7:23 pm

Hi all

With ILR you are told you need like 6 letters per spouse over the period to prove residence. How many documents are required and how to structure them for the citizenship application? 3-4 per year?

Naturalisation is separate from the immgration system which ends with ILR.
As an UK ILR holder it's just your passport(s) covering the residency period.
Naturalisation requires a minimum of documents.
