Post by tycouk » Sun Apr 17, 2016 10:07 pm

Dear Board ,
I need some suggestions from you.
my step son is 17 still holding on Indian passport and ILR, as he still needs another 3 years before he can apply for british citizenship.
when he got passport he did not have any surname on passport, me and my wife both have full guardianship on him. before he can apply to driving license and also for uni in next year i would like to add my surname to him. when I contacted Birmingham consulate they sent a info on their website stating that we need to have name change document sorry dont know the right word then paper ad in UK and in India.
I am not sure how easy this process is? could some one please suggest how this works.
your advices are much appreciated.

Thanks

A "generic deed poll" may not be acceptable for change of name application in an Indian passport. And DP is not the only document you need to change a name in an Indian passport!!

Indian Passport --> Documents required
Change of name in the passport
  • The current Passport having valid Visa or Residence Permit is required to be enclosed with self-attested photocopies of pages containing detailed passport particulars, Visa page and the page containing observation (s), if any. In case the latest Passport is additional booklet(s) issued to the original Passport, the additional booklet(s) plus the original Passport must be furnished.
  • Original clippings of the newspaper advertisements in UK and India (newspaper page).
  • Sworn Affidavit in the prescribed format (please click here for the form)
  • A note separately written by applicant justifying the complete/substantial name change

    Time Frame for service: MINIMUM 8-10 working days in normal cases, from the date of submission of application & 4 – 6 weeks if the application is submitted in any of the centre falling under the jurisdiction of Consulate General of India, Birmingham or Consulate General of India, Edinburgh.

    In some cases, clearance/verification is required from the Indian authorities. Processing time would be around MINIMUM 4-6 weeks.
Applicant should insert advertisements in two reputed newspapers (one UK newspaper and one Indian newspaper) and submit original newspapers at the time of applying for passport in his/her new name.

Whether one finds the process easy or difficult is subjective. No one can answer that for you!
