Hi - Advice Needed

Post by Liquid » Tue Mar 13, 2007 9:37 am

Hi, I'm a resident in the UK and am in a relationship with a female from the US. We've known each other for several years before getting together, but we don't want to be a long distance relationship for obvious reasons, and we're trying to get me over there. The one major hitch is - she has a chronic fear of marriage and simply can't do it, leaving me with very little options, it seems.

Any other avenue that can be taken? I'm guessing not, but it doesn't hurt to at least ask. Any advice given would be muchly appreciated, thanks.

.

You can visit for 90 days visa-free.

For longer, you need a job offer and then use that as a basis for a residency permit.

Do a bit of intense job searching by the internet and establish contacts for employment possibilities for 30 or 45 days (for example). Go on a 90-day visit, which can be extended a little bit in a couple of ways with creative timing and travel (visit Canada, Mexico, etc.), and use that time to secure a job offer and apply for work permit / residency.

Ideally you'll want a Green Card .. which is tough to get, but a lot easier for a Brit than just about anyone else in the world.

Without marriage to a US citizen you obviously have no chances of applying for an immigrant visa. You can try to look for a job in the US. Whether you get a work permit will depend, among other things, on whether you have a university degree and what your current occupation is. It's not going to be easy.

Don't even think about that. Entering Mexico or Canada does not count as leaving the US under the Visa Waiver Program unless you reside there. Click here to read the story of someone who had this idea and will probably regret it for the rest of his life. I myself visited Mexico during a trip to the US several years ago, then went back to the US, and it all counted as a single trip under the VWP.

Being a British citizen gives you no special advantage when applying for a US visa.

Why don't you bring your partner to UK to live.....you don't need to be in USA to keep your love alive....you can always bring your partner to UK. UK immigration is lot simpler.
