American marrying German, working in different EU country

Post by American » Thu Jul 17, 2008 4:16 pm

Hello all,

I am currently an American student in Germany with a student visa that lasts until September. My German girlfriend and I want to get married here in Germany. My question is: After we get married, am I allowed to work in the UK while my then wife finishes her job here in Germany?

I would like to work in the UK because I can speak English there. She would move to be with me in about a year when her job is finished. If I am able to work in the UK, how long does it take before I can start living and working there?

Thank you for your time and consideration.

If you are coming by yourself you would need to apply for a work permit or other visa to reside here. Being married to an EU national would not get you a visa unless you move with your spouse to the UK. So you can either stay in Germany for a year and then move with your wife when ready, return to the US or see if you qualify for a visa for the UK on your own accord.

Thanks sakura for the response. So when we move to the UK together, does my wife also need to find a job or, for example, can she be a stay at home mother?

Another question that just popped into my head. We live near the Holland-Germany border; can I work in Holland?

Thanks for your time and consideration.

Ur wife will have to be exercising a treaty right in UK, usually by working or studying or more rarely by being self-sufficient. I'm not sure being a housewife/mum is exercising a treaty right, others chip in....

You can only work in Holland if ur wife moves to Holland (or any other EU state other than her own) and exercises a treaty right there.
