Ancestral Visa British passport application

Hi all kindly advise if I can apply for an ancestral Visa even though I have a British father. An immigration adviser said I cannot do this because as of my birth I was a British citizen? I wqxr to do the ancestral rought with my son and husband and advise o this would be much appreciated
