Wonder how much more fee increase that one will have to endure.

Some people have asked about in-person fees.

Payments for in person applications wrote:17.—(1) Where—
(a) an application is made in person; and
(b) the applicant pays the fee in relation to such an application prior to the date that the application is made,
the fee payable is that in relation to the relevant application on the date of payment.
(2) In this regulation, the date of payment means the date on which the payment is made by the applicant, unless it is made by post, in which case it means the date that the payment is posted.

This YouTube video by an American Youtuber who has emigrated to the UK is worth a view. He takes us through the costs of his entire immigration journey.

It is an unusual journey in that he had to apply for multiple Tier 2 visas and was then accepted for an Tier 1 Exceptional Talent visa. However, the costs are very real and worth keeping in mind for anybody starting their UK immigration journey anew. Also worth noting that almost the entire cost he states exclude solicitor fees.

It is a relief that the government decided not to increase leave to remain application fees.

Now that the Conservatives have won a thumping majority in the Commons, I would work on the assumption (and I suggest that others do as well) that the Immigration Health Surcharge will go up to £625 per annum per applicant.

I would expect the changes to kick in in the April 2020 fees changes, but it could be earlier.

Also, for those of you who despised the Home Office, I am sure you will be delighted to learn that there are rumours that Borders and Immigration will likely be spun off into a brand-new, separate department. I doubt it will make any difference on the ground, but it won't be the HO that we will be complaining about.

The Home Office would then absorb prisons and probation from the Ministry of Justice, making it a “purer” department with a direct focus on crime.

The justice department and the role of justice secretary would be abolished, with the lord chancellor role with responsibility for courts and the judiciary hived out. This in effect would reverse Tony Blair’s 2005 reforms.

It would be interesting to see if nationality/naturalisation is retained by the Home Office or is devolved to the new B&I department.

These are only proposals at the moment and will likely be finalised and implemented into law towards the end of March.

It was announced in the 2020 Budget that Immigration Health Surcharge would increase from £400 (per year or part thereof) to £624 (per year or part thereof) from October 2020.

Spouse visas to £1,846 from £1,538

Student to £490 from £363

Inside the UK

Indefinite leave to £2,885 from £2,404

Naturalisation as a British citizen to £1,500 from £1,250

Child registration as British to £1.214 from £1,012
