It is a spouse visa, if he is not a spouse anymore and stayed in th UK then he is an illegal visitor. Best to go home than deported.

As parvus said, if the marriage ends then the spouse visa is null and void and he will be classed as being here illegally. He won't be deported no but the life of an illegal immigrant is a crap one.

your friend has to stay properly in his relationship with his wife for 2years then apply for ILR(indefinite leave to remain) and then after 3 yrs would be able to apply for naturalisation, otherwise he would be consider being in a sham of a marriage as he would be seen to have gotten married just to get stay in the UK which is a terrible thing to do as it messes up all immigrants when instances like this cause changes in immigration rules which unfortunately affect people who are working their way to citizenship etc.. and abiding by the rules and if the individual who married him loved him then its almost abusing their affection, so he has to stay put or possibly leave.
