Applied for passport - qualify under UKM

Post by TooHasty » Wed Mar 16, 2016 5:07 am

Based on the generic response from the Nationality Enquiries email address I went with the first option "You may test the strength of your claim to British nationality by submitting an application for a United Kingdom passport."

It was only after I had sent the application that I discovered I am eligible for registration by submitting form UKM as my mum was born in the UK (and I was born overseas in 1978).

Does anyone know what is likely to happen? Will they just reject my passport application as I'm not a citizen? (I sent my birth certificate, mum's birth certificate and her most recent British passport).

I believe this is only applicable for those who are already British by descent, e.g those born after 1983 outside the UK to a British otherwise than by descent parent.

You will need to register with form UKM first. I believe you have a lifetime entitlement to do this and the cost is currently £80 (not sure if is going up with the fee increase in a couple of days).

Once your UKM application has been approved, then you'll be a British citizen by descent and can apply for passport. :)
