Applied for Settlement Visa but want to go on a holiday

I was in a defacto relationship with my now wife since 2003 and we married Feb 2008. We then moved to Switzerland for a 1.5year contract and the company I work for will send us back to Australia but my british wife is wanting to live in the UK so I have just applied for a settlement visa. Easy! But now this is where it gets a little complicated. As the company I work for will send us back to Australia we will like to use these free tickets as a holiday. So if the application for the settlement visa (we put the date of travel to the UK as the beginning of Dec) is successful are we able to then go on a holiday to Australia for 2 mths in between? (Jan to Mar 2010)? Also, as my contract ends at the end of the year and I put the beginning of Dec as the moving date, are we able to extend the moving date to March (which will solve all the problems).

One more thing, the reason why I applied earlier than later is because we are going to the UK for Christmas and as they take my passport I needed to apply earlier.
