Applying for British citizenship amid divorce process

Post by jsc08 » Sun Sep 21, 2025 6:37 pm

Hi All,

I was on a spouse visa for 5 years and I got my ILR on November 2024.

I filed for divorce from my husband last July 2025, and wont be finalised until probably around March 2026.

I am aware that I can apply for citizenship a day after I got my ILR since my husband is British. But now that we are in the process of divorce, I want to know if I can still apply?

Thank you.

You can apply as you are still married. You will need your spouse's passport/British naturalisation certificate to apply. At this point if you wish you can also apply in your own right in November 2025.
