Applying for EEA permit to UK from Cayman Islands - update

Post by marcbreathnach » Mon Aug 30, 2010 10:23 pm

Hi all, I thought I would share my experience for anyone who lives on the Cayman Islands and wishes to get an EEA family permit to the UK and has to go through the Jamaican UK High Commission.

First off, reading the guidelines posted by WorldBridge do at times appear at odds with the actual online application, for example, the guidelines tell you you need to have a travel date (which caused me to buy a ticket to UK) but online application asks for your intended day of travel.

Second, when you travel to Kingston, Jamaica, best to stay at Spanish Court Hotel, its a 15 minute walk to both WorldBridge and Hign Commission.

Third, bare arms and legs are NOT allowed in Worldbridge site for some reason. My wife had a short sleeved top and shorts on (due to 100+F heat) and even though we waited in front of the guard for an hour, he informed us of the clothing ploicy as we were scheduled to enter the building. Thankfully our hotel Spanish Court Hotel was nearby.

Fourth. For the DHL return envelope and any copies made, Worldbridge does not accept USD in cash! Yes they will accept a bankers draft in USD but not cash. They will accept Jamaican dollars in cash (1 USD = 100 Jam Dollars).

Fifth, once you submit all your docs and return to cayman, it is then when you send your passport back to Jamaica to the UK High Commission. We relied on people at WorldBrdige who told us we would be contacted - no such thing - after 7 weeks we had WorldBrdige call center email the high commission who told us to promptly send over the passport.

Sixth. Kingston is a rough town, travel in pairs and be very careful. best of luck.
