Applying for OCI on the basis of father (not much proof)

Post by ragun » Fri May 16, 2014 9:24 am

Good day everyone,
I would like to apply for an OCI because my father was born and studied in India but later became a citizen of a different country but because he was born in 1935 I'm finding it really difficult to get proof of his Indian origin.

The only things I have are:
My father's current passport which says country of birth as India.
His baptism certificate
Indian and Pakistani citizenship act certificate of registration.

I even had a relative go and look at the local records to see if any other material could be found but for that time period they couldn't find anything or any papers they did find were falling apart.

I don't know if just it saying the country of birth is India in the passport will be enough, the baptism certificate can't be used and I came across a post by someone a couple of months ago that said that the above mentioned certificate of registration was refused as well.

I was told yesterday that if you go to HCI and mention that you have a baptism certificate, they would give you a form which you fill out, then you would take it to an Indian judge who would then stamp it and that could be used as proof but they weren't specific about what the form was called. Could someone here give me more details about this?

Thanks for reading.

How do I start the Nativity Certificate process?

It mentions that it's a sample certificate, so where do I get an actual one.

You have to use the template / sample certificate to apply for your own. The steps are mentioned in the link. You need to contact the designated authorities and provide necessary information as mentioned in the form.

Is this what a filled in Nativity Certificate looks like?

I just need to get one which is signed by a District Collector/ District Magistrate right?
I ask because I'm in India right now and want to know what the certificate actually looks like.

personally I haven't seen any nativity certificate but this looks fine to me.
district authorities may use slightly different format but as long as it confirms nativity and indian nationality, then it should be ok for OCI.

I want to get an OCI on the basis of my father, who used to be an Indian citizen (citizen of a different country now) but the weird thing is that the documents in the town where he's from have a different date of birth than his passport. So what I'd like to know is if I need to have a copy of my father's passport as one of the documents in my application submission.

I was just thinking of not including the copy because I have a nativity certificate as proof.
